Hi! I recently purchased a Jazzles CD and I LOVE IT! The
kids love it too! I am a Head Start teacher. The
kids like the CD so much, I let them listen to it in the learning
center by themselves.

Hi Lesley,
I really find your songs and story line fantastic.
I am a tutor and teach phonics. I find it difficult to get a student
to blend and say the word.
Thats all

I was very intrigued with your product! I teach kindergarten and
have many students in my classroom that are ESL students. I truly
believe the music helps them "hear" the sounds that the letters
make and helps them learn the language faster...not to mention that
they love music! I teach a letter a week to ensure that I
eventually cover all the letters. Many of the letters are
also used as a thematic unit...example, letter Pp is for
pumpkins. I teach this letter and its sound during a week
in October. Thanks for the "new" material...I like to use products
that keep me fresh!

I have just received my Jazzles CD It was more than I expected.
The music is not geared for just 5 years old. I can use it
with my older students as well. It is very hard to find
emergent literacy that is not too young. I have written to (name
deleted) because she is doing a lot of research in singing and
reading. I think this something to show at the big conference in
October.

Dear Lesley, I am a Field Editor at a school book publishing house.
After having discovered your music on the Internet, I could not
forget your website. I had to come back to hear the tunes again and
again. I could not resist wanting to possess the whole set. The
music is so good and the singing superb. I like the lyrics too.
Thank you all for such a wonderful piece of work. My warmest
regards to you and all ye beautifully-voiced folks. I will also
recommend it to other teacher friends.

Dear
Lesley, You can't
imagine how fast students can learn when it is in a "funny" way.
Although some Jazzles songs have some quite difficult words for
them, they are able to sing them with a perfect accent!!!
My wife first uses the painting sheets to teach them the
meaning of the words and the meaning of the "story" of each
song. This is usually in Spanish.

Your concept of "worksheets/music" is great
because music is the frame for my multicultural students. I've got
a project in a High School with emigrant students (e.g. Russia,
former Yugoslavia). We are studying the process of language
acquisition in second language (German) and foreign language
(English). The students are 6th, 8th, 7th and 10th Graders on level
C.
That means their skills are
poor and therefore our problem is to make
them more interested in learning English. The didactic
medias (i.e before Jazzles) they are used to work with are as poor as their
interest....
Again - thank you for your support!"

Here are some
experiences with the Jazzles lyric songs CD combined with the
worksheets:
I did it with 6th and 10th graders learning English since 2 and 5
years in a German High school - you remember? We framed
the (i.e. Jazzles) song "Rowing Boat" with
"Free time activities/Hobbies" and the "Melon" song with "What a
picnic!"
During the English lessons I considered a high motivation. The
positive result was, all students were able to sing these songs and
to write them down by heart. They learned
syntactical modifications, e.g. transforming the song texts in
another personal form or using another grammatical tense.
Step by step I will link all your Lyrics with themes in any
English textbooks. For learning the words
(vocabulary) your picture worksheets are very
supportive.
Best regards
Amerate

Independent Recommendations about the Role of Music and Creative Arts
Choral Speaking/Singing for ESL
"In the process of helping young
students learn about music -- about tempo, rhythm, pitch, meaning
of lyrics, and mood, teachers can provide rich language learning
experiences. Songs, poems (which include the lyrics of
songs), and chants provide students the safety of using the language in a group where their mistakes can go
unnoticed and provide additional aids to
their developing auditory discrimination. Choose songs,
poems, or chants that incorporate repetition, rhyming, rhythm,
humor, and word play."

Using Music and Movement for ESL
"Using music, poetry, and movement,

or in combination, can help students learn the sounds and rhythms
of the English language in an enjoyable, memorable

Using Visual Arts for ESL
"As art and life are inseparable,
art should be an integral part of the language learning classroom.
Provide many opportunities for students to experience and talk
about art and to develop fine motor skills and art vocabulary as
they develop concepts of line, form, space and color. Use drawing
to introduce new vocabulary and structures, and encourage students
to use drawing to aid them in communication when they don't have
the words."

Think about it. No matter where they're from,
ALL students love music and song.
It is just so easy to
get them to move to rhythm and clap away class room inhibitions and
tensions!!! Letting your ESL students
‘rock’ their way to English Language Proficiency is the
first part of the Jazzles experiment!
|

|
Here's
why...
By singing along, "in unison" with the class, your
ESL students can -- without fear --
- Practice and perfect their pronunciation of
English ...
- Take risks with words without
embarrassment...
- Experience in a wonderful way the
mood of the English language, its culture,
expressions and mannerisms.
Singing to
Learn is
especially helpful for memorizing different word
sequences, for understanding the rhythm of the
language and for perfecting ESL
pronunciation.
Think about Pop Stars. Have you wondered how they
can sing in several languages with almost perfect
accents? That is because singing allows you to
concentrate very carefully on each subtle
sound until you get it right. That is why
Jazzles is now one of the top-selling Teacher Resources -
vocabulary rich with activities, games, word-play and dramatic
extensions your students will find fun and engaging!

| Jazzles - it works for all
students upto young adults because all the language is
contemporary - not babyish!
Here's why
students's resources can be used for adult ESL learners
It is all about attractive story lines, beautiful
illustrations, creative themes and topics that can all have adult
appeal. Plus... students's resources usually have clear class
presentations, and creative development of related lesson and unit
plans. Jazzles meets all these criteria and is successfully used
for adult students through out the world.

I am not sure if you remember
me. I bought a copy of your CD to use with my ESL
pupils and said that I would let you know their
reaction to the music, the words and the pictures. It
has been a resounding success. They love it and can't get
enough of it. I have also used it for young
adults who are starting to learn English and here too it has been
more than great. Thank you.
Best wishes

Jazzles – and content suitability for ESL Students
Jazzles are songs but their lyrics can also be
considered poetry OR rhyming literature. ALL the
Jazzles words are REAL words and teach vocabulary in
context. Over 400 contemporary words are used – none
are babyish, all are useful daily. 400 words is a valuable starter
to understanding the English language.
Note - Many learn-to-read packages are full of made-up words which, although
funny and amusing, don't really give the student practical
experience with reading something that really makes
sense.
Jazzles could be called "English Language Learning Jingles"
Jazzles is consistent in its usage of prolifically alliterative, rhyming
songs with catchy upbeat music. And believe me,
these Jazzles "Jingles" are as effective
for easy recall of the lyrics and their 400 words in context
as any popular TV advertisement!
If you want to independently check the
accessibility of the Jazzles lyrics in terms of content texts for
ESL Students, go to the Tennessee
ESL Resource Guide Strategies for Mainstream
Teachers This is an excellent (Adobe PDF format)
reference, produced by the Tennessee Department of Education, and
includes a checklist to evaluate your texts for ESL students.
Out of 21 checklist criteria, Jazzles
LYRICS consistently meets 17 definitions as categorized
below:-
Sentences
Short sentences, limited number of multi-clause sentences, simple
verb tenses.
Vocabulary
Commonly used terminology, consistent use of terminology, few or
no slang/idioms
Content
Logical order of organization, clear presentation, graphical
explanations of the concepts, few unnecessary details, activities
for practice.
Physical Appearance
Informative illustrations, headings/subheadings, highlighting,
clearly readable print, enough open space on the page, free of
cultural stereotyping

How Jazzles actively involves
learners, their family and their community in
schools
For parents, Jazzles is a low-intensity resource;
students love to play the songs in their own time. There is no
tension, or stress. No students fighting to get away. For helping
students get ready to start school, all a parent need do is work on
just a letter a week -- or every two weeks -- and, usually within a
3 Month period, the student will be ready to enter school -
reading ready - and with many associated fine
motor skills to succeed.
For ESL students, you can talk with parents on how
Jazzles (and other sing-to-learn resources) helps their student
acquire English naturally. An important part of
parent\student support processes are school and class
performances. Jazzles can be used royalty free for
school performances - and you can legally photocopy the
lyrics (and coloring pages).
Over the year, structure a series of such
performances - each using one or two songs - and let parents see
their students performing with all their classmates. You can create
dramatic extensions or playlets. Every student can have a role - as
part of a chorus, walk-on\off part or as a lead. Run a Jazzles'
performance - and the problem is everyone wants to
participate!
Even some of my most challenging K-2 students, who
like being disruptive on stage, have had great fun being scenery
movers or looking after the sound-systems. Being responsible,
earning points and acknowledgement mentions is all part of how
Jazzles activity extensions aid students to work within the school
structure.
Jazzles is one of the
easiest ways you can show parents and families the importance of
various learning activities - - such as singing, drama, art,
crafts, drama, use of percussion instruments -- can contribute to
their students's literacy development and school
success.
Jazzles musical styles - include Funk,
Soul, Cha Cha, Rhythm and Blues, Rock, Smooth Shuffle, Boogie
Woogie, Soul, Samba, Mambo, Hawaiian, Big Band, Pasodoble, Dixie
Band, Line Dance, Jazz, Country, Gospel Rock, Disco, Swing, Ballad,
Latin and Showtime! See Jazzles Song Lyric Search
